Athens State University (Athens, Alabama)
History: Athens State was founded in 1822 as the Athens Female Academy, making it the oldest higher learning institute in the state. It has several ghost legends but the tale of Abigail Burns is the most popular.
McCandless Hall, which opened in 1914, is said to be haunted by the spirit of Abigail Burns, an opera singer. According to legend, Burns performed at the buildings’ opening night and was carrying a bouquet of roses as she boarded her carriage to return to her hotel in Huntsville. It was a stormy night and her carriage flipped, killing Burns. Her spirit reportedly haunts McCandless because she had told her audience she would return.
However, there is no evidence that this event took place and no evidence that an Abigal Burns existed. Two young women did die that year in Athens,
Eoylena Haroway and Lizzie Smith, and one could have been the performer.
Activity: A female ghost carrying flowers and dressed in a formal white dress has been seen and heard walking the walls and auditorium. Sometimes you can even smell the strong scent of flowers in the building. Who ever this woman is, she certainly is the most active ghost on campus.
Investigation: Alabama Paranormal Research investigated the campus and team members reported hearing screams, seeing shadows, being touch and hade several amazing interactions with the 3d mapping camera and K2.
You hear heavy footsteps in the upstairs hallway when you know no one is up there. Doors slam unaccountably. Commonly used items disappear and reappear without cause. The kitchen light turns on by itself. There's the unmistakable scent of a strange perfume in the air.
These may be indications that your house is haunted.
